Tour Northwestern Fjord's calving tidewater glaciers and towering granite walls. Travel by boat or kayak into Northwestern Fjord armed with detailed maps and information about its glacial history, tidewater glaciers, harbor seals concentrations, vessel anchorages, and kayaker campsite areas.
Among the most engaging destinations on the Kenai's outer coast are the spell-binding glacial enclaves in Northwestern Fjord. Eight major glaciers, including 3 at tidewater, flow into this steeply-walled embayment, with Northwestern Glacier (right) at the fjord's head.
In the early 1900s, Northwestern Glacier completely blocked the entrance to Northwestern Fjord with a towering wall of ice. As the glacier retreated, icebergs and strong tidal currents gouged a shallow channel (Northwest Passage) across the low rocky moraine bar.
Inviting cream-colored beaches, comprised of gritty granite powder, border Ribbonfall Cove (left). The cove's waterfront is a wonderful place to roam on foot and to observe the hanging glaciers and waterfalls on the upper hillside. Ribbonfall Cove is among the better camping areas in Northwestern Fjord.
